(Un)fair scoring of calculated answer questions?

Sally Jordan of the Open University put up a nice post concerning student mistakes for numeric calculated questions with requirements for significant numbers and correct units. She presents some data on the types of mistakes that students make. I think the conclusion should be that an e-assessment system should allow for more granulated checking and polytomous scoring of such answers.
